Illustrator: Unknown; author photograph by Jill Krementz (1940-)
Publisher: Fawcett Gold Medal
Series: A Travis McGee Novel
Year: 1973; this paperback is a later printing which mentions MacDonald's The Dreadful Lemon Sky (1975) on the cover.
Pages: 320
Format: Paperback, mass market
Provenance: Has a price sticker in the amount of 85¢ from Tessman's.
Opening Sentence: "After seven years of bickering and fussing, the Fort Lauderdamndale city fathers, on a hot Tuesday in late August, killed off a life style and turned me into a vagrant."
Random Passage: "I took a step and took the bills and put a haunch back on the railing. They both looked relieved."
Notes: The Scarlet Ruse served as the 14th book in a series with MacDonald's most memorable character, cynical Florida private eye Travis McGee. The McGee books each sported a color in the title, spanning from The Deep Blue Good-by (1964) to The Lonely Silver Rain (1985). As a bonus, I'm also including a bookmark produced by bookstore chain Waldenbooks to promote the paperback edition of Tina Turner's 1986 autobiography I, Tina (co-written with Rolling Stone journalist Kurt Loder).
